This morning, a news item at Information Week related to OpenVistA caught my attention. Not because I'm interested in this project, but its name assembles certain degree of similarity with the recently released Windows Vista. Though practically impossible, but the name OpenVistA sounds like an open source version of Windows Vista :)
Well, the reality is, OpenVistA has no relevance or relationship with Windows Vista. OpenVistA is the open-source version of Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA), which is an enterprise grade health care information system developed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Health care information system is undeniably a huge mammoth, which involves operational workflow from tens of varying departments, and potentially having data growing at exponential rate. It's such a complex jungle, that a tightly integrated health care information system as a whole will easily take years to be developed, and not surprisingly costing hundreds of million Ringgits.
I'm not a domain expert in health care, and thus can't assess how fitted and applicable the OpenVistA functionalities are in our local context. Assuming if OpenVistA is applicable in Malaysia's medical fields with minor incompliance, I believe it will be very much beneficial to improve operational quality.
